Hello my name is Mr. Hoy
I teach geography 12, Social Studies, and PE. These courses are my passion and I hope you will gain an appreciation for being active and living in a healthy environment. Read more about my philosophy of teaching. Some of my favorite things in life are food and exploring.
My educational background is a mix of formal university and experiential schools. After graduating from high school I went to school in my grandfather's home country of Norway. There I studied SCUBA diving, Norwegian language and culture, and hunting and fishing. I then perused my love for the outdoors at Strathcona Park Lodge (SPL) near Campbell River, BC. There I took courses in outdoor leadership and recreation while gaining a lot of experience travelling and living in the back country of Vancouver Island. After working in the resource sectors of BC I completed a degree in Geography and PE at Vancouver Island University. Shortly afterwards I enrolled at the same university to become a teacher.
When I am not at work I love to be active in the outdoors, this is my version of exploring. Depending on the time of season you can find me skiing or hiking in the mountains on Vancouver Island. I also love sea kayaking with my brother in the summer time. When I don't have time to get out in the wilderness I also play some urban sports like ultimate, disc golf, and squash.
I also like food, and lucky for me I can combine my love of the outdoors with eating well. Fishing is one of my favorite things to do. Both freshwater and saltwater are fun, but my favorite type of fishing is jigging for big lings on deep reefs! In the fall I like to go into the woods and get lost picking wild mushrooms.
